Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, is preparing to take on one of the most prestigious ceremonial roles in the British Army after successfully passing a demanding inspection at Wellington Barracks. The rigorous assessment confirmed the unit is fully prepared to serve as The King’s Guard across some of the nation’s most iconic royal sites.
The Company will now carry out guarding duties at Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Tower of London. These responsibilities demand exceptional discipline, precision drill, and immaculate turnout—hallmarks of the King’s Guard.

Ahead of deployment, the soldiers underwent intensive training to master the intricate ceremonial movements and traditions expected in London. Their efforts paid off, earning high praise from senior officers for their professionalism, focus, and attention to detail during the inspection.
Adding to the occasion is the presence of their much-loved mascot, Corporal Cruachan IV. The Shetland pony remains a popular and symbolic figure, drawing attention from the public and boosting morale within the ranks.

The Company’s first responsibility in London included guarding the Crown Jewels, marking the beginning of their ceremonial duties in the capital. They will continue to perform a full schedule of public duties, representing Scotland with pride in front of thousands of visitors from around the world.
This achievement highlights the dedication and professionalism of Balaklava Company and stands as a proud moment for Scotland’s ceremonial specialists as they take centre stage on a national platform.
